Thank you to the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (HUMA) for inviting the Chair of the ICC, Gary Gladstone to be a witness on their study of Bill C-20, An Act respecting the establishment of Build Canada Homes. HUMA’s work remains vital to our goals of supporting safe, accessible, supportive, and deeply affordable housing for one of Canada’s most underserved populations. EXPLORING AFFORDABLE HOUSING SOLUTIONS FOR PEOPLE WITH DIVERSE ABILITIES

We invite all organizations and groups interested in exploring solutions to the affordable housing crisis faced by people with diverse abilities. Here, we will provide a knowledge exchange on affordable housing construction projects, both completed and in progress. We will also have representatives from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) to discuss information and opportunities for funding. Learn from those who have completed housing projects or are in the process, and learn about housing partnerships that have been successful in different communities.

The ICC Day on the Hill took place on March 19th and 20th, 2024 in Ottawa, Ontario. Reena, along with the ICC, Community Living Toronto, OASIS, and the Provincial Network, KW Habilitation, Karis Disability Services, Empower Simcoe, and the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence spoke about the opportunities presented by the National Housing Strategy and our plans to enhance supportive housing for those with developmental disabilities across Canada. Member organizations shared success stories and challenges regarding housing in the sector, while Members of Parliament from all parties discussed collaborative efforts to increase support.

The Day on the Hill was organized by the Intentional Community Consortium with Reena, Community Living Toronto, OASIS and Provincial Network. It was held on March 27th, 2023. The purpose of the advocacy day was to continue bringing awareness to the housing crisis of people with developmental disabilities, and to ask all levels of government to continue their support of this population.
